On 1 August 2026, the Medico-Legal Society of Singapore, together with the SMA Centre for Medical Ethics & Professionalism (SMA CMEP), held a webinar on how artificial intelligence is reshaping the medical consultation — from the recording and transcription of doctor–patient encounters to diagnosis and clinical decision-support.
The session examined the challenging questions that arise where technology meets first principles: patient confidentiality, professional judgment, and the proper taking of informed consent. A moderated panel of eminent medical practitioners and medicolegal lawyers explored these issues in the Singapore context — including the informed consent principles in section 37 of the Civil Law Act and the MOH’s Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare Guidelines (AIHGle) — while looking ahead to the impending revisions to the informed consent sections of the SMC Ethical Code and Ethical Guidelines aimed at streamlining the law and ethics of informed consent into “core, irreducible principles”.
The talk was very well received by the medical professionals who attended.
